Candidates model and facilitate the use of research-based, learner-centered strategies addressing the diversity of all students.
Artifacts: Lesson Plan for VoiceThread
Reflection:
The lesson plan for the VoiceThread project incorporates students using technology for using new vocabulary. As a small group of English Learners, all of the vocabulary words were written with defintions, and put into sentences in their vocabulary journals. Next, they were given one word from their vocabulary list to draw a picture based on the definition and the example sentence. Once the picture was drawn and uploaded onto the VoiceThread site, the students defined their vocabulary word orally. This was later used to assist in reviewing their words before the quiz.
This procedure was step-by-step and it allowed the students to feel comfortable with the vocabulary word with its definition. Since I work with the English Learners, the WIDA standards helped the students to understand the overall goal to this lesson to demonstrate that speaking was going to be the main focus of knowing the definition of the new vocabulary word. Also, showing the students visuals to each word helped them to understand the definition and they were able to interpret the word in a similar way.
I learned that some of the students became more involved than others when talking and relating to the vocabulary words. There were a few in the shy stage but were able to participate by typing in their response. The longest part of this was recording their voices which makes me wish I had my own classroom. The part I would change is having more computers for students to record their voices on. This way I am not recording from one computer.
This artifact did appeal to the students in the classroom and teachers. The teachers were amazed with the final product of the lesson and did use it for their review. Many students who were not involved, wanted to be a part of the project. This was measureable on the students' quiz, which shows that it had an impact.
